Documentary the making-of 'Mariken' in four cinemas in The Netherlands

Documentary the making-of 'Mariken' in four cinemas in The Netherlands

'Mariken, visioen van een opera' will be shown in four cinemas in June 2018. The documentary, which premiered during the Film by the Sea festival last year, reflects the creative process underlying 'Mariken in the garden of delights', produced by OPERA2DAY, Het Nationale Theater, Asko|Schönberg and Cappella Amsterdam.

The film is special because Sonia Herman Dolz offers more than just a peep behind the scenes. From the very start in the creative process she follows composer Calliope Tsoupaki, director and initiator Serge van Veggel, conductor Hernán Schvartzman and actress Hannah Hoekstra. She shows how each of them had their own object as a 'vision' and how these four visions eventually merge into one production. Images of the making of the opera are organically blended with images of the actual performance.

OPERA2DAY played 'Mariken in the garden of delights' in the autumn of 2015. It was a new opera based on the story of Mariken van Nieumeghen. The show toured the Netherlands exactly 500 years after the first version of the medieval miracle play was published in Antwerp.

Films by Sonia Herman Dolz catch the eye. Earlier she made inspiring documentaries about Valery Gergiev, het Nationaal Ballet and Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen. Her films 'Lágrimas Negras' and 'Yo Soy Así' won important international awards.
